What is the Best Way to Cook Fish?

My go-to for protein is usually chicken. It’s cost-effective, quick, and so easy to make that you could do practically anything with it. However, I am trying to switch it up. Do you know that fish is a versatile protein, too? There are so many ways to cook it! Figuring out the best way to cook fish definitely depends on your taste. Here are a few of our favorite ways!

The Forq app is filled with tons of great recipes that can help you figure out the best way to cook fish. Scroll through to find some, or add your own!

What is the Best Way to Cook Fish?

In the Oven

One of the easiest, and therefore potentially best, way to cook fish is in the oven. Add the ingredients, follow the instructions, then let the oven do its thing. As long as you don’t dry the fish out, it should be delicious and flaky! Try it out with these Easy Baked Fish Fillets. The oven makes the breadcrumbs a little crisp, adding a delicious crunch! To make sure they’re done, cook until the fish flakes easily with a fork. For a little more challenging of a dish, try these Rice Stuffed Baked Salmon. Putting the dish together is generally easy, but you’ll want to baste it often to get the flavor right.

In a Pan

mfp_e184b3fe555fcc55482e0aabddd99f1e1376923If you’re like me, you like to have control over what you’re cooking. I find I have the most control when I am cooking over the stove rather than the oven and enjoy watching my ingredients transform into a meal in front of me. Pan-frying is one of the most popular ways to cook a fish. Try a recipe like Pan-Fried Fish with Peppers and Pecans for incredible flavor. When pan-frying, make sure to not overcrowd the pan or there will not be enough heat for them to cook properly!

On the Grill

Cooking on the grill is my absolute favorite way of cooking when the weather permits it. But, is it the best way to cook fish? That’s for you to decide! I love the flavors that come out on the grill. Grilled Salmon is one of my go-tos. It’s easy and tastes delicious! If you’re worried about cleanup since flaky fish can get messy, try putting a bed of sliced citrus down on your grill before placing the fish. It creates less mess! Another easy way is to find a recipe that calls for foil like this Citrus Fish.

3 of the Best Ways to Eat Healthier This Year

There are times in our lives that we decide to eat better. One of the biggest is the New Year. We look for change in order to make a change ourselves. However, eating healthy is not a difficult thing! There are tons of ways to eat healthier if you try. If you’re not interested in dieting, there are a few changes you can make to your everyday eating that will point you in the right direction.

The Forq app is filled with tons of great recipes that are useful for ways to eat healthier this year. Scroll through to find some, or add your own!

3 of the Best Ways to Eat Healthier This Year

1. Replace Carbs

Carbohydrates are an important part of any diet. Good carbs get absorbed slowly and give us energy. However, carbohydrates such as white bread create spikes in blood sugar levels. These “bad” carbs are usually high in sugar and processed foods, making them unhealthy. When you can, find something to replace the “bad” carbs. Make a lettuce wrap when eating a sandwich, like these Honey Lemon Chicken Lettuce Wraps.

2. Fill Up with Veggies

ways to eat healthierFilling up with veggies goes hand-in-hand with replacing carbohydrates. When there is a choice in the matter, opt for the healthier option. I find that many times when I go out to eat, I want to order the French fries but have gotten in the habit of getting the side of vegetables or salad instead. If you’re at home, it’s even easier! Find a vegetable recipe you’ll love– don’t make them bland. Some of my favorites are Green Beans with Caramelized Shallots and Roasted Brussel Sprouts With Pecans.

3. Stay Away from the Sauces

I got into the habit of cooking with sauces. I’m not saying they’re always bad, but a lot of times, the ingredients are not very healthy. If your sauce has cream or cheese, there are definitely healthier options. Usually, I opt to not use a sauce at all. Instead of cooking my chicken in sauce, I’ll grill it like this Grilled Lemon Chicken. If you’re worried about not having enough flavor, try cooking it with some veggies and citrus like this Orange Chicken Stir-Fry with Asparagus!

Rosemary sprigs for garnishes

Cranberry is my favorite fruit of the holiday season. We see it during Thanksgiving with the cranberry sauce, and somehow it makes its way through the rest of the holidays. This gin-based drink is one of the easiest holiday drink ideas– just combine the ingredients, then shake or stir depending on your preferences. It even comes with an adorable garnish idea; push a sprig of rosemary through a fresh cranberry, then place on top.

3. Boozy Bubbly Sherbet Punch

A classic sherbet punch is one of my favorites for a party! The great thing about punch is that you can put nearly anything in it and it will still taste amazing. Go by this recipe for Boozy Bubbly Sherbet Punch or give it a holiday twist. Instead of the lemonade, try cranberry juice then float fresh cranberries on top!

4. Cranberry Vanilla Mock Sangria

If you’re looking for a mock alcoholic beverage this holiday season, this Cranberry Vanilla Mock Sangria will do the trick. Spice things up with this fancy drink everyone will love, including the kids! This particular recipe calls for apples and cranberries as the sangria fruit, but I always find the more the merrier. Some orange slices would probably go great in there, too!

5. Mocha Nog

holiday drink ideasMocha Nog is a delicious, boozy spin on your traditional eggnog. To me, everything gets better when you add chocolate! The chocolatey aspect of this holiday drink is not overpowering– it gives it almost a frozen hot chocolate feel.

You Need These Unique Christmas Cookie Ideas This Year

We all have our favorite holiday cookies. For me, it’s gingerbread. As I was growing up, my whole family would gather in the kitchen to role out gingerbread dough, use the cookie cutters, then strategically place cinnamon hearts on top before baking. My mom would let me stay up past my bedtime to have a cookie fresh out of the oven. I’d even make a special one for Santa! Not only do we have favorite holiday cookies, we have our all-time favorites too. This year, I’m on a mission to make all cookies holiday-themed with these unique Christmas cookie ideas!

3 Ways to Turn Any Cookie into a Holiday Cookie

1. White Chocolate and Peppermint

Peppermint is a key flavor of the holidays, so of course I am using that to my advantage! These two ingredients make unique Christmas cookie ideas; all you have to do is melt the chocolate, dip part of the cookie, and sprinkle the peppermint! Use any cookie from chocolate cookies (what I used) to classic chocolate chip. See how I did it with these:

The best way to melt white chocolate is over the stove with the double-boiler method because it can easily burn. You can also do it in the microwave, which is what I did. Put your microwave power down to 50%. Place your white chocolate (either in chips or chopped) into a bowl, then place it uncovered into the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring each time make sure it doesn’t overheat.

Dip the cookies part way, then sprinkle with peppermint! To make peppermint chunks, place the candy (a candy cane, small peppermints, large peppermint sticks, etc) into a sealed ziplock. Place on top of a dish towel, then cover with another dish towel. Break up the pieces with a meat tenderizer or rolling pin.

2. Fun Cookie Cutters

Your kids will love this! Get creative this year with your cookie cutters. Everyone loves sugar cookies during the holiday, so it’s time to set up your game. Who says aUnique Christmas Cookie Ideas superhero cookie doesn’t go with Christmas? The holidays are the perfect time of year to bring the family together, and this is the perfect way to do it. Here are some of my favorites:

3. Color, Color, and More Color!

Food coloring is your friend during the holidays. Make any cookie festive by adding a few drops to pretty much any batter! Okay, so if the dough is a dark color, such as chocolate cookie dough, the color probably won’t come through. But how cute would it be if you split your famous snickerdoodle batter in half, then colored some green and some red? Experiment a little!

3 of the Best Non Traditional Turkey Recipes

Turkey is such a versatile bird to cook. There’s so much you can do with it! Turkeys don’t offer much flavor on their own, so it’s up to you to make the flavor happen. You can do this by rubbing the bird with a variety of spices, stuffing it, brining it, basting it, and more. We’ve chosen some non traditional turkey recipes from the Forq app to get your creative juices flowing! Don’t be shy; something new this holiday season with your turkey.

The Forq app is filled with tons of non traditional turkey recipes. Scroll through to find some, or add your own!

3 of the Best Non Traditional Turkey Recipes

1. Good Eats Roast Turkey

This Good Eats Roast Turkey will not disappoint! This recipe will give you steps and ingredients to brine the turkey before the big day. Brining can make a bird taste amazing and keep in moisture. However, taking a bird in and out of a 5 gallon bucket can be difficult, so this recipe may not be for everyone. But at least you know it will be very well-seasoned!

2. Smoked Turkey

The only special ingredient you’ll need for this Smoked Turkey is the right tool: a smoker. Smoking a turkey is arguably the easiest way to give your bird delicious flavor. Rub on the spices, then leave it in the smoker and let it do its thing! You should only have to check on it a few times, freeing you up to focus on other aspects of your dinner.

3. Evil Turkey

Don’t let the name fool you, the taste of this turkey is heavenly! This is one of the non traditional turkey recipes that is bursting with unique flavor. Evil Turkey takes in all the flavors from the pepper rub to create something like you have never tasted before. If you’re looking for something non-traditional, this is it!

Turkey Roasting Tips

  • Make sure to get your turkey in advance! You don’t want to be left without a bird. If you’re looking to buy from somewhere other than the grocery store, make sure to order it weeks in advance.
  • Don’t get left with an unthawed bird! Give yourself enough time to defrost your turkey. Do it in the fridge and allow 1 day per 4 pounds of bird.
  • Make sure you have everything you need for the meal, including a thermometer to check the turkey.
  • If you’re cooking a large bird, make sure it’ll fit in your pan. It may seem silly, but it’s happened before!
